Londinium was larger and more chaotic than Marian expected. Although the Romans were clearly in full control, perhaps this far from the center of the empire, some of the rules and processes had been relaxed. Docks the world over were filled with an outsized share of shouting, but here she heard several heated conversations bordering on violence—and that was before the ship had even been secured and the gangplank lowered.

The soldiers appeared alert, keeping a close eye on both the prisoners and the somewhat organized bedlam around them. As they moved their charges off the ship, she glanced at Corun a couple of times, but he studiously ignored her. They hadn’t spoken since that day, though he’d nodded in cool greeting occasionally. She admitted part of her would miss him a little, but the other part wouldn’t. And she was sure she would never see him again. He would deliver the prisoners to the mines in the southwest, beyond where she was going, and then return straightaway to Londinium for his next assignment. It would be awful being married to a soldier, anyway.

She followed the two Christian families into the noisy, dirty city, carrying her sturdy backpack. It wasn’t heavy. The food on the ship had been decent, but she had supplemented from her own stores, and it had been a long voyage. Now, thankfully, they were on land again. She had a purpose, a destination, and a little bit of coin she could use along the way if needed.

Suddenly it struck her hard … she was actually in Britannia, an entire world away from her family. A pit opened in her stomach, and she fought a blossoming feeling of panic as she tried to figure out how to fill it. Why did the Lord want her here? She hadn’t helped convert any souls on the voyage. She was a skilled seamstress, but there were a lot of those in the world, wherever you went. Could she really find a home with the Christians in Britannia? Would it be a permanent home, and would it be safe? The ‘wilds’ of Britannia weren’t for the faint of heart, and yet here she was.

“Marian, are you coming?” One of the men from her party, Xerxen—a challenging name to pronounce—had stopped and turned back. It dawned on her she was immobile, gazing with awe and a bit of fear at everything around her. She focused on him and pasted an unconcerned smile on her face. “Yes, sorry. There’s just so much to see.” She hurried to catch up, and the group moved on.

They had walked only a few blocks when she heard a commotion up ahead. Xerxen, at the head of the group, halted and stretched both arms wide, twisting his neck and whispering back. “Hold on. Something doesn’t feel right.”

Marian couldn’t see anything, and the crowd was growing larger and more animated. She heard Roman officers bellowing and someone else responding. Ignoring Xerxen’s warning, she nudged and shouldered her way forward so she could see what was happening.
